Teeth Whitening

Table of Contents

For many people, having discolored or stained teeth is a source of embarrassment or self-consciousness. Many of our patients face stains because of past poor dental hygiene, the use of tobacco products, or frequently drinking coffee or tea. They often request teeth whitening after at-home products have proven to be ineffective, or they want to whiten their teeth in a way that is proven to be non-damaging. Fennell, Yoxthimer, and Associates, DDS offer safe and effective professional teeth whitening services for our patients.

What is Teeth Whitening?

Teeth whitening is also referred to as teeth bleaching or even “power bleaching.” It is a professional dental service to remove stains and discoloration safely and effectively, resulting in whiter and brighter teeth.

How Does Teeth Whitening Work?

Teeth whitening works with a hydrogen peroxide solution, which is applied to the teeth and activated using a specialized light. The process typically lasts about thirty minutes. The light does not produce heat, and most patients find that the treatment is comfortable. Some patients with sensitive teeth may feel some slight discomfort during teeth whitening, however. Results from teeth whitening are immediately visible after the treatment is complete, and patients can repeat teeth whitening sessions if necessary to reach their goal results.

Who is a Candidate for Teeth Whitening?

Teeth whitening is generally safe and effective, but there are some patients who are not suitable candidates. In general, professional teeth whitening is best for patients who have surface stains on their teeth as a result of smoking, drinking coffee, or poor dental hygiene. It is possible for some patients to have genetically darker-colored teeth. In these cases, surface stains can still be removed by teeth whitening, but results will be less noticeable compared to other patients.  Additionally, some patients with highly sensitive teeth may find the treatment uncomfortable, in which case your dentist may recommend a safe at-home whitening treatment as an alternative. Your dentist will advise whether teeth whitening will be a suitable and effective treatment for you after a consultation.
